ABC, NBC, CBS Sue ReplayTV

The Washington Post carries an AP wirestory about the three major networks suing the parent company of ReplayTV - maker of digital personal video recorders (Networks Sue Digital Recorder Maker). Favorite quote from a Disney spokesperson, "We made clear we expect the use of copyrighted materials to be licensed and this technology does not allow for that." Pehaps the catchphrase for their weekly show should become, "Welcome to the wonderful world of licensing." ZDNet News carries the Reuters wirestory (TV networks sue Sonicblue's ReplayTV). ReplayTV, which was acquired in August by SONICblue (SONICblue Completes Acquisition of ReplayTV), will begin marketing the ReplayTV 4000 this fall — it will be the first digital recorder to incorporate broadband connectivity out of the box so that users can share television shows. Also, unlike a rival recorder (TiVo) that only permits fast-forwarding through commercials, ReplayTV allows the user to skip forward in 30-second increments. Interestingly, on October 16, SONICblue's ReplayTV was awarded an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for significant contribution to the advancement of television arts through unique technological innovation (SONICblue’s ReplayTV Wins Technological/Engineering Emmy Award for the Advancement of Television). Coincidentally, the New York Times' (reg. req.) weekly Circuits section carries a story about another advance in digital recorder technology - a television recorder that incorporates DVD-R and DVD-RAM technology (Erasing V From VCR, With a Disc). Slashdot has the inevitable discussion (TV Networks Sue ReplayTV). Time to review another TV recorder case Sony v. Universal.
