Radio Spectrum Follies
Posted by Ernest Miller on Tuesday, September 17 @ 00:36:06 EDT Telecommunications
The New York Times (reg. req.) reports how Christian broadcasters (such as the Rev. Don Wildmon's American Family Radio) are taking advantage of FCC regulations to virtually monopolize noncommercial radio spectrum and force repeater NPR stations off the airwaves (Religious and Public Stations Battle for Share of Radio Dial). There is also a hand-wringing editorial that doesn't propose a solution (Some Things Considered). Here's a solution: permit open access spread spectrum or common carrier. You are always going to have such problems if you permit the person who controls the distribution channel to also determine what content is distributed.
