''CD'' Label Not Available for Copyprotected Discs?
Posted by Ernest Miller on Monday, January 21 @ 11:30:28 EST Trademark
The Register reports that Dutch consumer electronics powerhouse Philips, which manages the "CD" trademark and owns a number of soon-to-expire CD patents, is taking the record labels to task for issuing so-called copyprotected CDs that are difficult to rip into MP3 format, but playback audio content normally in CD players (Philips moves to put 'poison' label on protected audio CDs). The problem from Philips' point-of-view is that these modified CDs do not play back on all players and could therefore undermine the "CD" trademark. C|Net News carries a Reuters wire story on Philips move to protect the CD trademark, as well as their intention to build CD readers that correctly read the copyprotected CDs so that the music can be copied (CD creator burns copy-protection efforts). The New Scientist had one of the earlier articles on this subject (Philips says copy-protected CDs have no future). Favorite Quote from Garry Wirtz, head of Philips Copyright Office, on why Philips has yet to initiate a lawsuit, "Any kind of legal action would take years and we don't expect these [discs] to last that long." Slashdot gets the story title wrong (Philips Says Compact Discs Can't be Copyprotected). Of course, before thinking too much of Philips (which is only attempting to protect a valuable trademark after all), consider this article from the EE Times about the efforts Philips is making to provide copyprotection for wireless retransmission of television through the home (Content protection plan targets wireless home networks). Slashdot's readers assail Philips mercilessly (Philips Targets Wireless TV Retransmission At Home).
