Hackers == Terrorists
Posted by Ernest Miller on Friday, September 28 @ 20:29:35 EDT Civil Liberties
One of the most overreaching aspects of the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) is that it would make many computer crimes (see, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act), such as cracking a computer to gain anything of value, into a federal terrorism offense with no statute of limitations (applied retroactively) and a possibility of incarceration for life for a first offense. Security Focus was among the first to report this story (Hackers face life imprisonment under 'Anti-Terrorism' Act). EFF has issued an action alert (Hackers Could Get Life in Prison, No Parole, Under "Anti-Terrorism" Bill) [deadline Oct. 7, 2001]. OS Opinion reports (Hackers, Spammers May Be Punished as Terrorists). Computer News Daily gets some reactions from politicians for its story (Cyber Liberties Group Sound Alarm Over Anti-Terror Proposal).
