Links: omg! Teens Teach FBI Agents How to IM
Posted by James Grimmelmann on Thursday, June 05 @ 15:33:48 EDT Computer Crime
The basic modus operandi of an anti-pedophile sting operation involves an adult FBI agent pretending, in IM and chat rooms, to be a teenage girl, waiting for suspects to make sexual suggestions and propose real-life meetings. Synthetic jailbait, with the emphasis on "bait."

The problem, of course, is that most field agents don't talk much like teenagers. They don't know the culture, and they especially don't understand the intricacies of IM argot. Enter Karen, Mary, and Kristen, eighth graders and now, FBI instructors.

The girls conduct seminars for the agents, explaining common IM acronyms, who's hot and who's not, and why a real 14-year-old girl would never, ever, say that Led Zeppelin is cool. Even the female agents aren't immune to adult-itis, with their silly assumption that George Clooney is hot.

Washington Post story here.
