More News from the Civil Liberties Front
Posted by Ernest Miller on Thursday, September 20 @ 18:26:06 EDT Civil Liberties
Slashdot's own roving editorialist, Jon Katz, gives his opinion (Civil Liberties And The New Reality). /. also has a discussion of the MSNBC article about polls showing Americans favor increased crypto controls (Poll Says Most Americans Favor Crypto Backdoors). The LA Times publishes a premonitory editorial (Cyber-Spy With Caution) as well as a news article detailing some of the challenges law enforcement faces (The Terrorists Are Winning the Cyber War). ZDNet News publishes another privacy-defending commentary (Privacy protection vs. national security). WIRED reports that the new civil liberties coalition will be holding a press conference at noon on Thursday at the National Press Club (Coalition to Congress: Slow Down) and an article describing the electronic trail of the terrorists - but points out increased surveillance measures would probably not have prevented the attack (Terrorists Leave Paperless Trail).

FindLaw posts a wire story (Caution Urged on Raising Police Power).
The Washington Post's media critic, Howard Kurtz, pens commentary (Big Brother No Longer So Scary), the news desk continued reporting on the anti-terrorism bill (Ashcroft Presents Anti-Terrorism Plan to Congress) and the editorial board urges caution (No Rush on Rights).
The New York Times (reg. req.) looks at the difficulties of surveillance (Surge of New Technologies Erodes U.S. Edge in Spying).
The Freedom Forum publishes an editorial opposing new civil liberties restrictions (Freedom flees in terror from Sept. 11 disaster) - Slashdot discussion of this article (Freedom Flees in Terror).
An article posted on MaximumLinux.org makes the case against crypto restrictions (Banning "uncrackable" software is a wrong idea).
