The Parents Television Council released a study yesterday that came to the shocking conclusion that basic cable television shows contain more raunch than broadcast television shows on average (Press Release: PTC’s First-Ever Cable Study Reveals Cable Surpasses Networks in Offensive Content). The study itself is very short, has a catchy name, but it is unclear how shows were selected for the study (Wired for Raunch: A Content Analysis of Basic Cable's Original Prime-Time Series). One interesting conclusion: Comedy Central's "South Park" was not only the show with the most foul language, but awarded the overall award for worst show overall (Wired for Raunch: Statistical Appendix). The Washington Post's television column has sport with the study (Basic Cable: Basically Raunchier Than Broadcast). Favorite quote, "Of course, when series co-creator Matt Stone was asked by the New York Times why he and partner Trey Parker wrote the episode [which contained 162 uses of a synonym for manure], Stone replied, 'We think it's funny.'"
The episode where the term sh*t is used 162 times is a satire on the role of profanity. From the episode guide ("The you-know-what hits the fan a 162 times when the citizens of South Park hear the word 'Sh*t' on the popular show, 'Cop Drama.' Boffo ratings have the executives at HBC plotting further use of the curse word, as the nation is struck by a mysterious plague that unleashes the ancient Knights of Standards and Practices. Only Chef and the boys can save South Park, and the world.").
