The New York Times (reg. req.) writes on the hearings held yesterday on digital piracy and the need for government requirements for copy protection (aka the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act) (Hearings on Digital Movies and Piracy). Favorite quote, Disney's Eisner essentially accusing the technology world of purposefully aiding and abetting copyright infringement, "We're dealing with an industry where an unspoken strategy is that the killer app is piracy." ZDNet News' report emphasizes the menacing nature of some Senator's remarks (Senate mulling anti-copying devices). One of the scarier quotes from Sen. Fritz Hollings, who heads the committee hearing the testimony, "When Congress sits idly by in the face of these activities, we essentially sanction the Internet as a haven for thievery." The hearing comes a few days after Jack Valenti, head of the MPAA, published a letter in the Washington Post castigating a conspiracy of law professors and calling on the computer industry to capitulate, I mean negotiate, with Hollywood (Movies Get Framed). WIRED's Declan McCullagh points out the party line divisions for the SSSCA (Democrats largely favor, Republicans largely oppose) (Content Spat Split on Party Lines) and the tech industry's response (High-Tech: U.S. Out of Hollywood). Slashdot readers look at the hearing (SSSCA Hearing), the electronics industry response to the copyright interests (Tech Industry To Hollywood: Slow Down, Camper), and Valenti's Letter (MPAA Wants Copy-Controlled PCs). WIRED had some of the first reporting on this bill back on September 7 (New Copyright Bill Heading to DC). Politechbot has a copy of the high-tech industry letter to Hollywood (Letter from SSSCA Opponents). Cryptome has complete text of the draft SSSCA (Security Systems Standards and Certification Act). Mike Godwin, who has written previously about the bill (A Cop in Every Computer) was at the hearing (Re: IP: intel backs consumers in copyright war). He refers to some of the strong testimony provided by Intel opposing the bill (IP: a letter from Vadasz to Senator Hollings etc after his testimony).
