Fight Intensifies on Anti-Terrorism Bill
Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, October 03 @ 20:54:49 EDT Civil Liberties
The Washington Post reports that the administration is getting impatient with the effort to modify the anti-terrorism bill to protect civil liberties (Anti-Terrorism Bill Hits Snag) but praises bipartisan efforts at compromise so far in an editorial (An Improving Anti-Terror Bill). ZDNet News publishes a commentary looking at the interplay between consumer information privacy with regard to the renewed debate on government surveillance (The changing definition of privacy). MSNBC reports that some private companies revised their privacy policies unilaterally in the course of the terrorism investigation (Web firms rethinking Net privacy). The New York Times (reg. req.) reports that parts of the anti-terrorism bill aren't particularly popular in the libertarian-flavored West (Plan to Expand U.S. Powers Alarming Some in Colorado). An article featured in Newsweek implies that looser standards for search warrants might have alerted the government to the terrorists' plans (Access Denied). The UK Register looks at Carnivore alternatives that do not provide as much information to the government as Carnivore (Carnivore substitute keeps Feds honest) - here is the Slashdot discussion (Cheaper Carnivore Alternatives Still Want To Spy On You).

Crypto-gram has published a special edition with regard to many of these issues (September 30, 2001).
InternetWeek does not believe that any anti-encryption legislation would be effective (Encryption Debate Revived).
