Up For Re-Election? Don't Update that Webpage |

The Washington Post reports that U.S. Senate rules forbid Senators up for re-election from updating their official websites 60 days prior to the election (Senators Stymied by Web Restrictions). The House does permit such updating. You can read the usage policy here (U.S. Senate Internet Services Usage Rules and Policies). For example, Sen. Susan Collins (R - ME), who actually has one of the nicer official websites, is unable to post information about her stand with regard to military action in Iraq. Of course, this claim might be more compelling if her "unofficial" website actually had information about where she stood vis-a-vis Iraq. Still, the complaint is a valid one, and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics rules should revisit this issue. As government services increasingly take place via the Internet, such a policy will increasingly conflict with service to constituents.
