The FBI sent lately a clear message to the American Hackers not to open an independent electronic warfare aimed at computers

The FBI sent lately a clear message to the American Hackers not to open an  independent electronic warfare aimed at computers and communication Infrastructure in Iraq. This warning, initiated by NIPC (National Infrastructure Protection Center), declares that “Patriotic Hacking” is a crime and may lead to indictments.

NIPC announced that the warning was published to raise the public awareness to hacking activates worldwide. Past political conflicts have lead to massive information attacks and counter attacks by hackers which included websites defacement, virus spreading and Denial of service attacks.

The American government makes it clear this time that “Patriotic hacking” will not be tolerated while an organized information warfare may be initiated by the government if the circumstances for such an attack arise (see: Washington Post). Commentators assume that  NIPC’s announcement came due to  assessment of risk to American infrastructures if an electronic warfare begins. While American critical infrastructures are dependant upon the Internet and communication networks and can be severely damaged by hacking activities, Iraq has only 12,000 computers connected to the Internet and only minor valuable information is accessible from the network. At the same time, hacking attacks aiming to damage the computers in Iraq might cause an unexpected severe damage to American serves and computers. (More in Nana (Hebrew))
