Links: Tecmo Threatens Legal Action Over Third-Party Patches
Posted by James Grimmelmann on Friday, April 11 @ 11:31:45 EDT Consumers
Tecmo's Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball is an XBox game that features, inter alia, nearly-nude female characters. While the "nearly" part is important to Tecmo, the "nude" part is of more interest to several fans who are working on patches to render the characters clothesless. Although such patches don't yet exist and would work only on an XBox modified at the hardware level, Tecmo has threatened legal action against the makers of patches that "infringe copyrights and other legal issues."

This is, of course, a publicity stunt. (Score: 0)

The first I heard of DOABV being released was a press release masquerading as news on the BBC website about just this issue. It's obvious that Tecmo is putting this story about to raise interest in the game. Clearly, even if patches are written, they're only going to work for a few people who have the technology to download arbitrary amounts of porn from usenet anyway.

They're probably trying to goad someone into misunderstanding this and condemning the game; nothing sells to rebellious teenagers better than banned computer games with tits in.
