Developments on W3C Patent Policy Front
Posted by Ernest Miller on Sunday, October 14 @ 21:05:34 EDT Governance
O'Reilly, one of the most respected technology publishing houses and a member of the W3C, has come out against the W3C's proposed patent policy which would permit web standards to include patents that require fee-based royalties (O'Reilly Opposes W3C Patent Policy). O'Reilly also publishes an analysis piece that focuses on how the proposed patent policy can be used to sneak in requirements for digital rights management (DRM) into the Internet's standards (A Web of Bronze, a Medium of Lead: Web Content at Risk in W3C's Proposed Patent Framework) as well as a good look at the opposition arguments on O'Reilly's XML.com (Patents, Royalties, and the Future of the Web). C|Net News reports that both Apple and Hewlett-Packard now oppose the new policy, even though both were listed as part of the group of authors of the policy proposal (Apple, HP modify stance on patent plan). The W3C has invited open source (Bruce Perens) and free software (Eblen Moglen) advocates to be invited experts in the W3C Patent Policy Working Group - in addition to outlining the (Next steps in W3C Patent Policy process).

Slashdot hosts a discussion on HP and Apple's change of heart (HP, Apple Drop Support for Royalties on Web Standards).
