The New York Times (reg. req.) takes a short look at three telecom cases regarding the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that the US Supreme Court will be hearing this term (Slew of Supreme Court Cases to Focus on '96 Telecom Law). Tomorrow, the US Supreme Court will hear arguments regarding whether the FCC can regulate pole-attachment fees for cable companies providing broadband service - the utility companies say no, cable companies say yes (National Cable Television Association, Inc. v. Gulf Power Company, et al. [00-832]). On October 10, the court will hear a case involving accounting procedures used to determine what competitors must pay a telephone company to lease equipment (Verizon Communications Inc. v. Federal Communications Commission, et al. [00-511]). The third case, to be heard December 5th, involves a question of federalism, in particular, whether state rate setting may be reviewed in federal courts (Richard L. Mathias, et al. v. WorldCom Tech., Inc., et al. [00-878]). Slashdot hosts a discussion (Supreme Court To Revisit 1996 Telecom Act This Term).
