Supreme Court knocks down door-to-door solicitation law

anthony_dipierro writes "The Supreme Court Monday struck down an ordinance that prohibits "canvassers” from "going in and upon" private residential property to promote any "cause" without first obtaining a permit from the mayor’s office by completing and signing a registration form. Judge Rehnquist was the lone dissenter, who argued that the content-neutral regulation deserved intermediate scrutiny under the First Ammendment. This should set an interesting precedent for current and future spam regulations."

As it presumed to tell an individual living in that community whether or not they wanted people to register before talking to them.

I'm assuming that a no-trespassers sign would be able to be enforced for those people who didn't want canvassers to come to their doors.

Instituting another sign, "no trespassing without registration" would be equally effective - and not restrictive, assuming a central registration point.
