Why You Can't Buy A Windows/Linux Combo Computer
Posted by Ernest Miller on Tuesday, September 04 @ 20:11:11 EDT Antitrust
The Register points out an important fact facilitating the demise of BeOS and holding GNU/Linux back from wide adoption on the desktop - Microsoft does not allow OEMs to provide dual-boot machines with both Windows and an alternate OS (Jean Louis Gassée on the antitrust dog that never barked). Byte.com's BeOS columnist also takes a good look at this little-noticed fact (He Who Controls the Bootloader). The DOJ's Antitrust Division will probably not be happy with how it is portrayed in these articles. As long as GNU/Linux struggles on the desktop, the bootloader question remains an extremely valid one.
