Your Face is Not a Bar Code
Posted by Ernest Miller on Monday, September 10 @ 11:26:59 EDT Privacy
Phil Agre, associate professor of information studies at UCLA, has written an excellent essay explaining why the increasing use of surveillance cameras in public is a bad idea (Your Face Is Not a Bar Code: Arguments Against Automatic Face Recognition in Public Places). The article includes many responses to common arguments in favor of such cameras, as well as a host of links for further information. Slashdot discussed the article (Your Face is Not a Bar Code) ... although Agre thinks that the discussion was "generally depressing."

Not Bored brings us both the Surveillance Camera Players and a copy of the Law Enforcement Association of America's press release opponsing surveillance cameras.
