WIRED is reporting that Cuba has sharply restricted the sale of PCs to those outside government or without Ministry of Internal Commerce approval (Cuba Bans PC Sales to Public). In related news, SiliconValley.com is carrying an AP wirestory describing how Cubans circumvent government controls over Internet access (Despite strict government control, clever Cubans still get bootleg Internet). The Carnegie Endowment for Peace issued a report last summer on control of the Internet in China and Cuba (The Internet and State Control in Authoritarian Regimes: China, Cuba, and the Counterrevolution). Here is a quote from the resolution banning PC sales:The sale of computers, offset printer equipment, mimeographs, photocopiers, and any other mass printing medium, as well as their parts, pieces and accessories, is prohibited to associations, foundations, civic and nonprofit societies, and natural born citizens. Interestingly enough, similar legislation, known as the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA) is under consideration in the U.S.
