Patent
Anonymous writes "Slashdot is carrying a story on NCR's internet patents. They have patents that cover a renge of things but the most telling appears to be patent number 5,991,791: Security aspects of computer resource repositories which appears to cover all e-commerce.

The full /. story is here.

Read below for some questions.

What I want to know is, what does this mean? Are these patents enforceable and, if so does it mean that NCR has finally instituted the "Internet Tax?" Or, can we invalidate them by making a search on the Internet Archive? If that was done could such records stand up in court?

Lastly, what does it mean for the Patent system if prior art can be found? If we can easily locate prior art by a search on the archives as has been happening in SBC's case (see here, here, and here on /. and here and here on The Register) then what does it mean for the patent system? Has the USPTO effectively begun shirking their duties?
