Earlier this week, Al Jazeera aired footage depicting the bodies of U.S. soldiers and several POWs in Iraqi custody. U.S. media outlets are struggling, internally and publicly, over what to do with the tape. So far, CBS is the only major network to air the footage, but they've agreed to blur the soldiers' faces at the Pentagon's request. CNN is only showing a single still image of American casualties, with no identifying features, and warning viewers that it is "disturbing."
The U.S. government is urging the media to refrain from running the tape, suggesting that it would be "unfortunate" and that affected families still need to be notified. Others suggest that the video could cause a "Somalia Effect" that might sap support for the war.
Whatever the networks decide to do with the tape, it's immediately apparent that interested parties will be able to see it. The images in question, and other non-western war coverage besides, are widely available on peer-to-peer services like Kazaa. If you want to see it, the choice is yours.

Re: POW Coverage on P2P Nets (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 26 @ 08:02:31 EST | The other night I was watching the late night news (I can't remember the channel, possibly msnbc) and they had this extended bit on how Iraq was violating the Geneva Convention by broadcasting images of POWs. The entire time I was remembering the coverage of the war in Afganistan when we saw POWs we had taken on a daily basis. (Remember John Walker, the American Talib?)
Anyway, after a commercial break they moved on to their next bit, and without batting an eye showed footage of Iraqis that had surrendered. That's right, Iraqi POWs. |

probably have it. Didn't they have the Pearl video, for
instance? |
