More on the Civil Liberties Implications of 9/11
Posted by Ernest Miller on Sunday, September 16 @ 01:49:33 EDT Civil Liberties
Salon carries two articles of interest (Send in the online spooks?) and (Don't go overboard). Findlaw reports on a bill introduced in the Senate to permit wiretapping in cases of terrorism (which apparently is not currently legal) (Senate OKs Expanding Wiretap Law). Declan McCullagh continues to report on this issue for WIRED (Senate OKs FBI Net Spying). The New York Times (reg. req.) takes a look at the rising political pressure for more surveillance (Some Foresee a Sea Change in Attitudes on Freedoms). This is also a concern overseas, as the UK Guardian reports (Society's freedoms may be curtailed).

Law.com article (A New Landscape as U.S. Seeks to Protect Itself).
Law.com takes a historical look at attacks on civil liberties in times of war (In Times of Crisis, Law Speaks, but Often With a Forked Tongue).
ZDNet News article (Senator calls for encryption crackdown).
The Center for Democracy and Technology has issued a statement (Preserving Democratic Freedoms in Times of Peril) and a page to track proposed legislation (Response to Sept. 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks).
Salon reports that the DOJ is asking for increased wiretapping rights, such as roving wiretaps that follow one person (no matter what phone he/she uses) and permitting wiretaps where terrorism is suspected (Ashcroft seeks enhanced wiretap powers).
