BoingBoing points out a cool new toy that would be a very nice addition to my home entertainment network (We all pay Hollywood's price for DVD). The Kaleidescape server is a DVD-ripping video jukebox that stores DVDs by the dozen on RAID hard drives. The movies can then be accessed through an onscreen interface and played back from any television connected to a movie player connected to the server via ethernet. Such a device could be built at home for a few thousand dollars. However, Kaleidescape's server is licensed (meaning that the MPAA won't sue them like they sued Reimerdes or like the RIAA sued the over the Diamond Rio) and thus the price for a server that holds 30 DVDs is $30,000. Thank you, DMCA.
