Dvorak on Hi-Quality Hollywood DVD Bootlegs |

John C. Dvorak has an interesting column on DVD piracy just published on the PCMag website (Vortex of Piracy). In the article Dvorak notes the dominance of highly professional DVD bootlegs in Asia under the illicit trademark DVD-9 (which actually refers to a single-sided dual-layer DVD - DVD-9). DVD-9 discs, such as the bootleg versions Dvorak discusses, can only be pressed with professional equipment and cannot be made by the average consumer with a DVD+R. Interestingly, these bootlegs are of films not yet released on DVD, yet the bootlegs contain DVD outtakes and special features. Sounds like the recent AT&T Labs study (see, Hollywood Bootlegs an Inside Job) was right. Ironically, the illicit DVD-9 brand is now being ripped off by other bootleggers trying to profit off the reputation for quality of the DVD-9 brand.
