All sorts of intermediaries are targets for copyright owner litigation. It's interesting to note, however, that in both the United Kingdom, and Australia, there's been a turning up of the heat directed at the Universities.
The Times is reporting that "Every university in Britain will today receive a letter from the British Phonographic Industry and its sister organisation, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, reminding them that unlicensed internet copying is a breach of legislation"; the letter apparently points out that "The legal risks include injunctions, damages, costs and possible criminal sanctions against the institutions and their heads where systems are used for copyright theft.”
Not so striking, perhaps. Such letters aren't so very uncommon. But note that on April 10 here in Sydney, Australia we have proceedings against several Australian universities, in which copyright owners are seeking information about users (something akin to the Verizon case, but this time directed against Universities). Several universities have resisted providing the data.
This could get interesting.
