CT sex offender registry returns
Posted by Steven Wu on Tuesday, April 01 @ 11:55:39 EST Privacy
Now that the Supreme Court has decided Connecticut Dept. of Public Safety v. Doe, Connecticut's sex offender registry is back online. You can access the registry itself here.

The database allows you to search by an offender's last name, or by the (Connecticut) city and zip code. As a side note: what is curious is the lack of an option for worried CT residents to enter their addresses in order to output a list of the nearest registered sex offenders. Maybe the authorities worried that such a search would unduly freak people out.

"what is curious..."
Such a capability would require a GIS back-end, geocoding of the offenders' addresses, ability to geocode the inquirers' addresses, etc. Probably too expensive for cash-strapped states.
