Governments Choosing Open Source
Posted by Ernest Miller on Monday, November 26 @ 20:17:45 EST OpenSource
The French Committee for e-Government (ATICA — in French), an official government organization, is officially in charge of promoting open source and free software within France. European Open Source advocates support the initiative, of course (France Towards Open e-Government). Governments are beginning to understand that devotion to Microsoft is not necessarily in their best interests and that there are alternatives, in March IT World took a look at developments in Latin America (Linux spreading rapidly in Latin America). Just last week, the Times reported that the Office of Government Commerce has threatened to drop Microsoft as a software supplier for nearly 500,000 British civil servants because of changes to Microsoft's licensing scheme that increases costs 50-200% (Whitehall could drop Microsoft). The Register covers this story as well (UK Gov agency threatens to dump 500,000 Windows desktops). Undoubtedly, open source software is a major competitor.
