The Google Effect

Anonymous (Name Withheld on Advice of Counsel) writes "Jennifer 8. Lee writes an interesting article about public documents in Cincinnati: "Dirty Laundry, Online for All to See"

Similar issues have been raised (in non-governmental contexts) by a few other recent pieces, including this one from the Washington Post, "What Does Google Say About You?" and this previous one from Ms. Lee herself, "Net Users Try to Elude the Google Grasp".

It is interesting how the concerns over privacy in a largely frictionless digital realm are related (not directly analogous--but related) to concerns over copyright. Can access to information/content be too easy? Peter Suber recently offered some thoughts on "the problem of excessive accessibility" in an April 2002 issue of his newsletter devoted to Free Online Scholarship. (Blog here)

Though it might be termed a "problem" of some sort, it seems strange to call the free flow of information a problem. Is "googling" a neighbor, friend, or job interviewee really such a bad thing? Good question for manners experts.

For a humorous slant on the issue, see
"Robot Exclusion Protocol".

p.s. By the way, googling "Jennifer 8. Lee" reveals plenty of speculation about her very cool and numerical middle name."

I taught an Introduction to Digital Culture online course this past summer and we discussed some of these exact questions.
