MP3s Potential Savior, Not Death of Music Industry - Study
Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, August 14 @ 10:24:51 EDT File Sharing
The Canadian Globe and Mail brings word that a new study from consulting and analysis firm Forrester Research has determined that file sharing is not what is causing the music industry problems (MP3s not source of music industry woes: Study). More interestingly, Forrester recommends that the music industry allow consumers to download and freely burn copies of the music they have purchased (by the song and album, or subscription) (Downloads Did Not Cause The Music Slump, But They Can Cure It, Reports Forrester Research). They call the set of features they recommend The Music Bill of Rights. The name is sheer marketing by Forrester, but the ideas seem fairly solid. [via MetaFilter]

This is a study? (Score: 1)

>"Based on surveys of 1,000 on-line consumers, we see no evidence of decreased CD buying among frequent digital music consumers."

Well, first of all, self-reported data is simply not accurate, especially self-reported data regarding participation in illegal activities. Secondly, they only say they see no evidence of decreased CD buying among frequent digital music consumers. Anyone who knows the laws of supply and demand knows that the first consumers affected by competition are the less frequent music consumers. Further, many (perhaps most) of those who have discovered P2P filetrading and use it to obtain music aren't digital music consumers at all.

That aside, how were the 1000 online consumers selected as to avoid bias?

In a Salon Interview Stan Liebowitz of the University of Texas at Dallas states somewhat more cautious opinions that tend in the same direction as those of Forrester's report.
