Only a week after the Supreme Court struck down [PDF] two provisions of the Child Pornography Prevention Act (CPPA) by a 6-3 vote, Representative Nancy Johnson has introduced the Child Sex Crimes Wiretapping Act of 2001 in the House of Representatives. It has passed the House Judiciary Committee and is now awaiting consideration by the full House.
The bill essentially makes it easier for law enforcement to obtain wiretaps on persons suspected of engaging in or having material constituting or containing child pornography by amending Section 2516 of title 18, United States Code (Section 2516. Authorization for interception of wire, oral, or electronic communications). Section 2516 of title 18 essentially grants federal judicial officials the power to authorize applications for interception of wire or oral communications.
