jimcyl writes " The New York Times is reporting on yesterday's "Gray Tuesday," a 24-hour online protest of EMI Records decision to silence DJ Dangermouse's critically-acclaimed "Gray Album," which mixes together the lyrics of rapper Jay Z and the rhythms and chords of the Beatles.
EMI says that the "Gray Album" is copyright infringement and blames Danger Mouse for not participating in "the well established market for licensing samples." The article, however, notes that permission to sample Jay Z and the Beatles might have cost Danger Mouse more than 100 percent of the publishing rights to the album.
If copyright law is supposed to foster the progress of science and the useful arts, then how can we justify the fact that it seems like it's only doing so if it fattens the wallets of large corporations?"
