I've yet to see it, but Revolution OS, a documentary about GNU, Linux and the OS movement, is now available for rental at Netflix.

I saw it and liked it, but beware that it is very US-centric, spending most of the interview time with Linus, Bruce Perens and rms, esr and the founders of Red Hat and Cygnus.

Of the above, esr and rms are the only ones not in the SF Bay Area. esr was interviewed in a generic backyard which could have been someone's house in SFBA. They showed a bit of rms walking around Cambridge, but this part of the film felt like a field trip "back East." Hazards of a limited budget, I guess.

Also, good amount of coverage of Linux World(s?- maybe 1st two) and SVLUG install-fest.

I really would have like to learn a bit more about Alan Cox, Miguel de Icaza and Trolltech.

I must say, though, that my literate, but non-programmer mother, father and sister watched with me (visiting over Winter Soltice) and I think they learned a lot, without having to pause & explain too much.

Very rms-Free Software and Perens-Open Source Software & GPL oriented with only a little talk on BSD.

Definitely see it though!

Also, Po Bronson's book The First $20 Million is Always the Hardest about Silicon Valley startups is now a movie, released on DVD Dec 24, 2002 and also avail at Netflix. Writers did a crafty job updating the story for post-boom.
