Civil Liberties in Time of War
Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, September 19 @ 18:22:09 EDT Civil Liberties
The Washington Post publishes two editorials, one by John Podesta (Chief of Staff for former President Clinton) favoring increased security measures (Tools for Counterterrorism) and another by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) favoring careful consideration (Liberty At Risk). In the news section, the WashPost reports that Bin Laden's organization may have used steganography(?) to communicate (Terrorists' Online Methods Elusive). ZDNet News publishes a commentary defending strong crypto (Would more security make us more vulnerable?). Slate hosts an intriguing discussion between Eugene Volokh and Stewart Baker (Civil Liberties in Wartime).

Declan McCullagh writes for WIRED about a new anti-terrorism bill to be introduced in Congress (Bush Bill Rewrites Spy Laws).
The New Scientist says encryption restrictions will be ineffective (Controlling encryption will not stop terrorists).
The New York Times (reg. req.) reports on some biometric security measures being considered (Exploring Technology to Protect Passengers With Fingerprint or Retina Scans).
An MSNBC poll shows Americans favor stronger encryption controls (Americans back encryption controls) and face scanning is becoming more popular (Interest in face scanning grows).
The Boston Globe reports on the new civil liberties coalition (From left and right, a call for caution on new laws) as well as publishing a cautionary column (Civil liberties may take a hit).
Computer News Daily has a syndicated article (New Wiretap Rules May Alter Internet's Landscape).
