Music Business Models - Playing that Old Song One More Time
Posted by Ernest Miller on Friday, September 28 @ 22:12:04 EDT Copyright
The LA Times surveys a number of new, licensed emusic sites (New Song-Sharing Services to Put Honor System to the Test). At least one of the executives is realistic about the systems' appeal for the forseeable future: "I think we're pretty realistic that it's going to have limited consumer appeal."  ZDNet News reports on more sophisticated attempts to make it difficult to rip MP3s from CDs (New CDs designed to end 'ripping'). An executive for copyprotection company SunnComm wins the award for disingenuous statement by saying, "Now we're all taking a more aggressive stance to make sure the consumer isn't left out in the cold." This from a company that will force consumers to adopt Microsoft's copy-protected Windows Media format. For a survey of real file-sharing software take a look at the review roundup on InfoAnarchy (The Current State of File Sharing).
