Rapper sued for using answering machine message
Posted by Steven Wu on Sunday, March 30 @ 02:36:14 EST Oddities
This is sort of an unusual news story to post here, but it involves law and technology (albeit obliquely), and the facts are unusual.

An anonymous Los Angeles man (identified as "John Doe") left a message on rapper Snoop Dogg's machine; the message denounced Marion "Suge" Knight, who is supposedly affiliated with the Bloods street gang. Without John Doe's consent, Snoop Dogg then used part of that recorded message in a rap song. Now, John Doe is suing Snoop Dogg for "intentional infliction of emotional distress and voice appropriation" (monetary damages unspecified) because he claims that his life is in danger for publicly maligning Knight.

The Smoking Gun has John Doe's complaint here. (And, in apparent disregard for John Doe's concerns about his safety, they even have an MP3 excerpt of his phone message.)
