International ID Card Roundup
Posted by Ernest Miller on Saturday, September 29 @ 00:31:10 EDT Privacy
Newsbytes reports the good news that the Bush Administration does not favor a national ID card despite some calls from congress and broad (70%) support for the idea in opinion polls (White House Will Not Support Push For National ID Card). MSNBC discusses how easy identity theft currently is and how new technology might help (Identity theft easy for terrorists). Meanwhile, in Canada, the Ottawa Citizen reports that the government intends to implement a previous decision to issue tamper-resistant ID cards to immigrants more quickly (Immigrant ID card on the fast track). In the UK, national ID cards won't be used to stop terrorists, but merely to facilitate government services, according to the home secretary, reports the UK Guardian (Blunkett qualifies likely role of ID cards ). The proposed cards, which will be mandatory, will be called "Citizen Entitlement Cards." In an unrelated statement, the home secretary also thinks that a lottery should be held to award people who actually bother to vote.
