WA's opt-in-only law for phone solicitation on hold
Posted by James Grimmelmann on Friday, February 14 @ 10:31:59 EST Telecommunications
Washington State has a law on its books that bars phone companies from using calling records for marketing purposes for anything besides other telecommunications services. And that's exactly where the law is going to stay, for now -- on the books. Verizon, annoyed at those pesky consumers and those pesky consumer-protection laws, filed suit, and a federal district judge has issued a preliminary injunction suspending the law while the case goes to trial.

I wonder what goes through people's minds... (Score: 0)

I sometimes wonder what goes through people's minds when they make decisions like this. By people here I am refering to telco executives - the ones who made the decision to collate and sell calling information about their customers. For 120 years, one thing that has been consistent about the big telcos is trust. They might be expensive, slow to respond, arrogant, etc., but you could always trust them to provide decent service. And for that same 120 years, protecting customer privacy has been part of that trust. As far as ever knew, it was easier to get gold out of Fort Knox than to get calling information out of the telco (without a warrant anyway). Now the telcos decide to breach that trust and start selling calling data - for what? Do they really expect to reap any long-term gain from this? After their customers figure out what is going on and get really, REALLY angry, will the telcos be in a better position or worse? And just what goes through a person's mind when he decides to violate 120 years of trust for a fast buck?sPh
