W3C to Reconsider Royalty-Based Patent Policy
Posted by Ernest Miller on Friday, October 12 @ 20:43:18 EDT Governance
eWeek reports that the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) will be taking another very hard look at their proposal to allow patents that require fee-based royalties into W3C standards (W3C to reconsider patents in standards). One option would be to permit an exception to fee-based royalties for open source projets. C|Net News publishes a commentary favoring fee-based patents, if they are the best technology for the job (Why the W3C patent proposal makes sense). Although the author of the piece notes the complaints of the open source community, he does not respond to them. He also disputes the views of analysts (see, C|Net News: Will W3C mean dollar signs?) that the policy would only be useful to large companies.
