Al Jazeera banned from trading floors
Posted by Steven Wu on Thursday, March 27 @ 09:25:21 EST News
Following the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), NASDAQ has banned the Arabic television network al Jazeera from broadcasting live on its trading floor. Al Jazeera faced controversy for broadcasting images of dead soldiers captured by the Iraqis. The NYSE explained its ban by claiming that it only allows "responsible" news coverage. NASDAQ's explanation: it only has limited broadcast spots, and it wants to choose networks that give investors a view of the market. (It's worth noting that al Jazeera is the only network to lose its credentials in NASDAQ.)

Of course, people have criticized these bans as violations of press freedom and bad precedents. I'm not sure anything can be done about it though.

I think, if this was a reaction to Al Jazeera broadcasting images of POWs, there may be very few journalists on the trading floors in the very near future.

I've just had the dubious pleasure of watching British forces shooting at, then manhandling and handcuffing POWs from Basra. This seems no less a violation of the Geneva convention than the images displayed by Al Jazeera.
(The bulletin was show on the EuroNews channel at about 2am GMT today.)
