AT&T Gets Through Cable What It Couldn't Through Phones
Posted by Ernest Miller on Tuesday, September 03 @ 21:29:36 EDT OpenAccess
Dan Gillmor writes in the Mercury News about AOL's new business model, forced upon it by AT&T cable (AOL capitulates, gives up struggle for 'open access'). Rather than simply buying access to AT&T's cable connections wholesale, AOL will become a bundled service like any premium channel, thus ensuring that AT&T maintains its relationship with the customer. The International Herald Tribune explains the deal in more depth (Comcast and AOL: a new era?). What in the world does this deal provide the customer except a single bill from the cable company? It's sad, really.
