FTC Sues Over Pop-Up Ad Mousetrapping
Posted by Ernest Miller on Tuesday, October 02 @ 19:36:22 EDT Consumers
The Washington Post reports that the FTC has sued John Zuccarini over his abusive use of pop-up ads to trap browsers at his websites, a technique known as "mousetrapping" (FTC Seeks to Close Misleading Web Sites). You can also read the agency's press release (Cyberscam Targeted by FTC). John Zuccarini is a well known "typosquatter" who may have the record for domain name disputes, this Google cached link page lists over 30 different cases involving hundreds of domain names (ICANN Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy Arbitration Proceedings Involving John Zuccarini or His Affiliates as of June 30, 2001). WIRED also carries the story (FTC Seeks to Trap a Mousetrapper), as does c|net news (FTC shutters thousands of Web sites). Slashdot carries a discussion (FTC Shuts Down 'Pop-Up Trapping' Sites) - some wonder why browsers make it so easy to do this sort of thing. Why is it a better idea for the government to sue, rather than convince browser designers to fix this?
