The New York Times (reg. req.) reports that JVC, the Japanese consumer electronics giant, has developed a new high-definition video player, that has received the support of four major film studios (4 Studios to Issue Films in a High-End Video Format). According to the JVC press release, the technical standards are quite impressive, including 50GByte storage capability (JVC Announces New “HDVideo” Recorder Capable of HDTV Recording and Playback). Of course, the reason that Universal, Fox, Dreamworks, and Artisan are releasing movies into this format is "D-Theater" — the marketing name for JVC's proprietary digital rights management. Slashdot's audience has fun with the concept (Copy-Protected Digital VHS). If you are interested, the MSRP is $2000, but you can find the player advertised on the web for only $1300 (JVC HM-DH30000 HDTV Recorder). All I have to ask is, why?
