Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, January 15 @ 10:46:18 EST Copyright
The decision was written by Ginsburg (very bad news). C|Net News' brief copy of a Reuters wirestory (Supreme Court OKs copyright extension).

The fight will continue.

Slashdot discusses, but no details yet (Disney Wins, Eldred (and everyone else) Loses).

UPDATE 1105 ET 15 JAN 2003:

Lessig Blog has links [all PDF] to the majority opinion by Justice Ginsburg and dissents by Justice Stevens and Justice Breyer. LawMeme will have mirrors shortly.

LawMeme Mirrors:
Justice Ginsburg's majority opinion
Justice Stevens' dissent
Justice Breyer's dissent.

UPDATE 1140 ET 15 JAN 2003:

Donna Wentworth is doing a great job as usual following this breaking story (Mickey in for the Long Haul).

I've got a lot to read and digest, but hopefully will have some comments and analysis later.

I have two questions, mainly because I never thought Lessig would lose this case, it's just so counter-intuitive. Anyway,

1) As a Canadian, we still have (I believe) death + 50 terms. Does hosting US copy righted content in a country where the term has expired violate any (host country) law's? Would an American be liable for viewing said content? Would the host site author be risking legal action if travelling to the USA?

2) This idea came up on . Is there any "salvage" provisions for out of print or undefended properties a la PatentTrademark Law?

Thanks,

Confused in Canada

My quick question is based upon my ignorance: why is it bad news that Ginsburg wrote the opinion?
