As of yesterday, the nationwide telemarking do-not-call registry has become law. President Bush signed the bill creating the registry, which will function as a national opt-out-once list for marketing phone calls, paid for by fees on telemarketers. The Direct Marketing Association has already filed a lawsuit challenging the registry on First Amendment grounds.
"Charities, surveys and calls on behalf of politicians would be exempt," so Americans can probably expect to get a lot more "consumer survey" phone calls once the registry starts up in the summer.
