MPAA Eats Its Own
Posted by Ernest Miller on Tuesday, January 29 @ 09:23:12 EST Copyright
New Line Cinema has been forced to withdraw movie trailers, posters and online promotions for Mike Myers' upcoming movie "Austin Powers in Goldmember," the third installment of the Austin Powers saga, according to this Reuters wirestory on Yahoo! News (Powers Battles Bond Over 'Goldmember' Title). The reason is that an arbitration panel of the MPAA has ruled in favor of MGM which owns the James Bond franchise and expressed opposition to the parody. Although New Line would clearly win if a copyright battle ensued under a parody defense, this just goes to show how well the MPAA understands copyright. This isn't the first time MGM has challenged the Austin Powers franchise, either. Previously, MGM withdrew a similar challenge to "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" when New Line agreed to run previews for MGM movies with the spy parody. You just know that Slashdot would cover this story (007 Dis(Gold)members Austin Powers).
