The Scourge of the Information Age, Litigated
Posted by Paul Szynol on Tuesday, October 01 @ 00:08:38 EDT Consumers
A Reuters article quotes Attorney General Bill Lockyer's description of spam as "the scourge of the Information Age". Having thus expressed the appropriate level of disgust, the Attorney General's office in CA filed an anti-spam law suit on Friday, "against Los Angeles-based PW Marketing LLC, alleging the company violated the state's statute banning spam and engaged in deceptive advertising and unfair business competition." The charges: first, PW violated state law because it failed to include either a phone number or an email address via which consumers could place a request for removal from the mailing list; second, PW did not include the letters "ADV" in its subject line, and thus did not appropriately tag their email as an ADVertisement.

The Attorney General's office is asking for samples of spam. If you have something to contribute, send it to http://www.ag.ca.gov/spam.

Meanwhile, says a WIRED article, porn spam is getting raunchier.
