Bad day for identity theft
Posted by James Grimmelmann on Thursday, January 23 @ 17:01:08 EST Privacy
The New York Times is just chock-full of good stories about bad news today. Two stories about identity theft stand out. Here in the U.S., reports of identity theft nearly doubled this year to over 160,000. Identity theft remains the number-one form of consumer crime reported to the FTC.

Meanwhile, in Russia, the customer records of Mobile Telesystems (MTS) have leaked out; you can now buy CDs purporting to have five million customer records on Moscow street corners. Because the customer information must be shared by telcoms with government agencies, no one even knows which organization is responsible for the leak. So far, MTS has acted decisively to shut the barn door, offering its customers new PINs. No word yet on the location of the horse.
