Hyperlinks, the little bits of code that quickly whisk Web surfers from one site to another, may soon be forced to detour around legal and technical "No Trespassing" signs.
Most at risk of running headlong into virtual blockades are the "deep links" that bypass another site's front page, leading users directly to specific content.
Legal experts say that deep linking can violate U.S. and European copyright and trademark laws....
Some sources believe the future of deep links may be decided by the outcome of a preliminary injunction filed by the Danish Newspaper Publishers' Association. The association wants the court to ban newsfeed service Newsbooster from deeplinking to Danish newspaper stories.
