Microsoft Releases IM Multitool
Posted by Ren Bucholz on Monday, February 17 @ 23:41:12 EST File Sharing
MSNBC reports that Microsoft is about to release a beefed-up IM client with limited music-sharing functionality. The software is called "3°," the music feature is called "musicmix," and it's got the RIAA's blessing:

"Threedegrees is also a fascinating experiment in how music can be legally shared over the Internet. After much negotiation, the labels OK’d musicmix, once Microsoft agreed to somewhat hobble its features. (Playlists have a maximum of 60 tunes, and the songs won’t play unless the original owner is participating.)"

A little bird told me that the songs are actually downloaded to each user's computer, but the names and locations are obfuscated. The official website is up, but it's currently just an email collector.

If it's true that the songs are stored but cryptically hidden, any bets on how many hours before someone figures out how to de-obfuscate them? I'm guessing 12.
