Free as in Peer - Reviewed?
Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, August 07 @ 10:11:34 EDT News
First Monday, a free peer-reviewed journal on the Internet, has published a pair of articles regarding access to articles and information. The first is an overview of the debate and partly explains why all that wonderful research provided to commercial vendors for free isn't freely available Talking Past Each Other: Making Sense of the Debate over Electronic Publication). One of the main issues the article raises regards electronic publication preservation - it is a lot harder for dead trees to be destroyed or get lost than ephermeral bits. The second article details efforts by the University of North Texas to resolve this difficulties (A Metadata Approach to Preservation of Digital Resources: The University of North Texas Libraries' Experience). Although in the early stages, the program at UNT (Government Information Connection) provides a good look at the many issues involved. ABC News' science columnist takes a short look at the peer-reviewed free publication issue Freeing Information: Is it Time to Make Peer Reviewed Research Free?).
