W3C Patent Policy Fight Gets Worse
Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, October 03 @ 21:03:49 EDT Governance
Danny Weitzner, head of the World Wide Web Consortium's Patent Policy Working Group and the Technology and Society Domain has come under some heat for the new patent policy being considered. The issue is whether W3C's quasi-official web standards can incorporate royalty-bearing patents. If the proposal is accepted then it could have a tremendous impact on the open source software movement - which would not be able to make compliant software since there is no business model to ensure payment for royalties when software is provided with an open source license. For the W3C's perspective, see the proposed policy (W3C Patent Policy Framework), the (backgrounder), and (Patent Policy FAQ). The W3C has already responsed to some comments (Response to Public Comments on the W3C Patent Policy Framework Working Draft) and is looking for additional comments (www-patentpolicy-comment@w3.org Mail Archives [Deadline Oct. 11]). The UK Register has been following this story closely (The free Web's over, as W3C blesses Net patent taxes), including talking to Weitzner about the controversy (Web standards schism 'terrible' - W3C patent policy boss) and open source guru Bruce Perens (We'll fork the web to keep it Free - Perens). C|net News hosts a commentary by a Gartner analyst opposing the new policy (Standing in way of standards).

Slashdot discussions (W3C Considers Royalty-Bound Patents In Web Standards) and (W3C Looking for More Patent Feedback).
