Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
Posted by Paul Szynol on Tuesday, December 03 @ 13:53:56 EST Oddities
Walt Disney Japan released "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" on DVD in July (official movie page is here). So far, the company has produced 3 million copies.

Three consumers conducted computer analysis of their copies of the DVD, and discovered an excess of the red color tone. The excess, they claim, affects the quality of the picture.

They have sued Walt Disney Japan in the Kyoto District Court court. They are seeking a replacement of the faulty DVD, and 10,000 yen in damages.

Coverage is here.

Just to supply some background, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi is better known to English-speaking audiences as Spirited Away. It is the latest animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Japanese artist/god who created such classics as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and (most famously here) Princess Mononoke. Spirited Away broke Japanese box office records to pieces, taking the top spot away from Titanic (which is just ahead of Princess Mononoke). Let's hope that any problems with the DVD are fixed by the time it's released in the US!

I think when I was a kid, I seem to remember my family tv had a knob that let you adjust the degree of "red" in the television picture...

...would it have been possible to do that analysis in the US without violating the DMCA?

I haven't used commercial computer DVD players, but my impression was that they generally don't make it particularly easy to run statistical analyses of color balance. But getting the raw data requires something like DeCSS... how did the plaintiffs do it?
