Links: DVD Distributors Cut Prices in Russia
Posted by Steven Wu on Wednesday, April 07 @ 16:53:30 EDT File Sharing
Genius! The New York Times reports that the film industry is cutting prices on DVDs sold in Russia in order to combat widespread piracy.

Part of this move is obviously to deal with how ridiculous the price of an imported DVD is in Russia: $20 to $30, in a country where the average monthly wage in the city is $200. But the article also points to how different Russia's copynorms are.

Most Russians, including law-enforcement agents, don't view buying or producing pirated goods as a serious crime. . . . "It's part of the Soviet legacy," said Timothy Swanson, with the United States Embassy's commercial section here, which has been battling piracy on behalf of American film and music companies. "An artist was an artist--he got paid a salary. There weren't royalties for artists or composers. Everything was owned by the state--for 70 years intellectual property rights never existed."
Of course, Jack Valenti disagrees: says he, "The only way to kill piracy in Russia is strong copyright law with stern penalties and government resolve to enforce that law."

how about in America?
or is piracy not that bad to do to such drastic measures as cutting the price?

"Most Russians, including law-enforcement agents, don't view buying or producing pirated goods as a serious crime. . . ."

nor do America's youth. They will inherit this country.
