Librarians sue over porn
Posted by Steven Wu on Tuesday, March 25 @ 10:45:01 EST Free Expression
As most Lawmeme readers know, the American Library Association is arguing against the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), which withholds federal funds from libraries that do not install filters on their computers. (See their briefs here.)

Now, in a twist to the CIPA story, 12 Minneapolis librarians are suing their library because they were exposed to pornography from library computers. The librarians are claiming that the "barrage" of sexually explicit Internet material--all accessed by patrons, it seems--created a hostile working environment that discriminated against them.

Even assuming the ALA wins its CIPA case, this type of sex discrimination suit, if successful, may compel most libraries to install filters anyway.

The full story is here.
