Links: Sony Must Confront Fake-Critic Suit
Posted by Steven Wu on Friday, January 30 @ 12:25:04 EST Free Expression
Not too long ago, a movie scandal broke out when it was revealed that David Manning, a critic who effusively praised even the worst Columbia Pictures films, was a hoax, created by Sony (the parent company of Columbia Pictures) to drum up publicity.

Where companies act badly, lawsuits will follow. Several moviegoers who bought tickets to see "A Knight's Tale" have filed a class action suit against Sony for the deception. Interestingly, Sony responded by claiming that its false advertisements were protected speech. Now, a state court of appeals has just rejected that argument, ruling that the advertisements were commercial speech and therefore covered by California's commercial statutes.

The court's rejection of Sony's claim can be found here. (Link from How Appealing.)
