Copy Protection Worthless?
Posted by Steven Wu on Thursday, November 07 @ 15:16:33 EST Copyright
This may not be news for most computer users, but according to an article in The New Scientist, computer scientist John Halderman conducted studies on various copy protection schemes and found that "the technology built into today's CDs to stop people copying them is futile." Furthermore, software and hardware upgrades mean that any future antipiracy measures will probably prove pointless in the long term. The only significant impact of antipiracy measures, according to Halderman, is increased inconvenience to honest consumers.

The New Scientist article is here, and you can also download the actual study, Evaluating New Copy-Prevention Techniques for Audio CDs (postscript file).
