AOL IM Battles Yet Another IM Service
Posted by Ernest Miller on Thursday, January 31 @ 11:16:22 EST OpenAccess
ZDNews reports that AOL is blocking an IM aggregating tool from Trillian, which allows people to easily use multiple IM systems at once (AOL shuts out users in battle over IM). AOL has been doing this for years, blocking versions of Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger as early as 1999 according to this C|Net News report (AOL blocks Microsoft Net messaging). Open Source IM Jabber has fought a losing battle with AOL as well, according to the FAQ (Is it true that I can't use Jabber to talk with people on AIM?). The FCC attached a provision to the AOL Time Warner merger to guarantee interoperability in its IM services before offering "advanced, IM-based high-speed services." But these restrictions are meaningless according to AOL's IM competitors in this Jan 2001 C|Net News article (FCC critics call IM conditions toothless). Apparently so. Slashdot regulars make the usual comments (AOL vs. Trillian).

While this may not seem terribly important, IM is one of the killer apps of the Internet — coming out of nowhere to become a major part of the Internet experience. IM is even becoming an important source of communication within organizations according to a commentary on ZDNet News (The new IM battleground). Open Access between IM systems will be nearly as important an achievement as open email systems.
