A Cooperative Wireless Network as the Last Mile?
Posted by Ernest Miller on Monday, October 01 @ 19:44:46 EDT Telecommunications
C|net News publishes one of two recent articles on the growth of community wireless access (Free wireless Net access for the masses). Infoworld also looks at the trend (Free wireless networking movement gathers speed). There are a number of questions regarding security and wired access policies (i.e, opening your wireless LAN to the public violates many ISP use policies). Of course, the most important question is whether your community is networked (802.11b Community Network List). You can always ask GAWD (GAWD: Global Access Wireless Database).
UPDATE
Byte.com has a good article detailing an example of the issues in building a local wireless community (A Wireless Neighborhood Freenet).

O'Reilly, fabulous publisher of computer-related books, is hosting a session on creating such community networks at an upcoming conference (Nov. 5-8) in Washington, D.C. (Wireless Community 802.11b Networks).
WIRED looks at the first fully wireless community and the problems crossing the digital divide (Wireless Village Waits to Connect).
ISP-Planet asks what this means for ISPs (Wireless Freenets).
