FCC Mandates Digital Television - Will Hold Ruling on DRM
Posted by Ernest Miller on Thursday, August 08 @ 12:05:36 EDT Telecommunications
According to an AP wirestory, the FCC has, as expected, mandated that all televisions sold in the United States incorporate digital tuners by July 2007, beginning with large screen televisions which are required to include digital tuners by July 2004 (F.C.C. Votes to Require Digital Tuners in New Televisions). More importantly, Consensus at Lawyerpoint reports that the FCC will also be holding a rulemaking on requirements for DRM in digital television tuners ... comments will be due by Sep. 30 (FCC NPRM to issue). We will link to the NPRM when it is available. Consensus at Lawyerpoint also links to two letters to the FCC criticizing the DRM proposals (EFF to Powell: Be wary of broadcast flag mandates) and (Public interest groups ask FCC to consider consumer impact of broadcast flag).
