A Killer's Cache
Posted by Paul Szynol on Monday, October 14 @ 02:49:55 EDT Privacy
The primary suspect in the Helsinki explosion is one of the victims -- a 19 year old student who might have learned how to assemble home-made bombs by conducting the necessary research on the Internet.

"The youth was an avid user of online chat rooms, especially a Finnish one focused on explosives and bomb building which has now been shut down by authorities", Reuters reports.

Authorities are now probing the youth's surfing habits to determine if, in fact, he'd acquired the information from the web.

As someone from the city, I wanted to post a short comment. I am always suspicious of any and all "he got it of the internet"-comments.

Understandably most (if not all) of you cannot understand the following, but this is one of the posts claimed to be posted by the bomber:

"RE:osiot(9.10.2002, 00:35) Kuorella nyt ei oo paljon p:kankaan arvoa, ellei nyt sitten tee sirpalepommia. Ihan tavalliset teroittimet, maustepurkit ja limutölkit kelpaa hyvin kuoriksi... Tai ehkä pyrotekniikassa sitten. Mustaruuti ei detonoi, ellei sitä ole pakattu tarpeeksi tiiviisti."

A rough translation:
"the outer shell counts for s**t, unless you are constructing a fragmentation bomb. Plain ordinary pencil sharpeners, spice containers and soda cans will do fine.. or maybe in pyrotechnics then. Black powder will not detonate unless it has been packed tightly enough."

from the site http://koti.mbnet.fi/oknp/pommiforum/kkf-osiot.htm

This is a forum for people interested in chemistry and specifically bombs and the post discusses about building the outer layer of a bomb to be effective in explosion.

I would, however, like to point out that according to information on the media, the guy was a chemistry student and in fact he appeared to advice others on the forum and not the other way around, so the Internet should maybe not be blamed that much.

A sad event for our small nation up north. My condolences to anyone who reads and is affected personally by the tragedy.
