The Problems with Plugging the Analog Hole
Posted by Ernest Miller on Friday, May 24 @ 08:41:43 EDT Digital Millennium Copyright Act
Consensus at Lawyerpoint, which I can't recommend highly enough, is the Electronic Frontier Foundation's blog on the undertakings of the Broadcast Protection Discussion Group (BPDG). What is the BPDG, you ask? According to the EFF:
The Broadcast Protection Discussion Group is an obscure group of Hollywood studios and technology companies that are negotiating a "consensus" for any gadget or code that can touch the studios' product. Once they're done, they want to go to Washington and ask Congress and/or the FCC to give their "standard" the force of law.
Consensus at Lawyerpoint has been running a number of good articles recently. One of their latest is by Cory Doctorow (Hollywood Wants to Plug the "Analog Hole"), which looks at how Hollywood intends to control all analog-to-digital conversion. There are some parallels between this article and LawMeme's recent piece on the "analog fallacy" (The LawMeme Guide to Spider-Man and Star Wars Bootlegs). Doc Searls publishes one interesting response to this continued power grab by Hollywood (This is not a simulation. This is a real attack.).
