Music and Radio Censorship?
Posted by Ernest Miller on Tuesday, September 18 @ 22:35:21 EDT Free Expression
WIRED carries an article about the circulation of a quasi-official list of songs radio stations should not play in light of the tragedy in order not to offend (Radio Sings Self-Censorship Tune). The Washington Post looks at local radio station responses (The Radio Listener: After Heroics, Russian Reporter Stricken). [The censorship issue appears half way through the article] F***edCompany.com has a purported list of the songs banned, including John Lennon's "Imagine," Neil Diamond's "America," and the Surfari's "Wipeout" (Clear Channel's list of songs with questionable content). Hits Daily Double has an article and another list of the songs (Lyrics Scrutinized as Music Biz Reaction Mounts) and (Clear Channel's List of Songs with Questionable Lyrics). On the list, all of Rage Against the Machine's songs are banned ... an article at NME claims that RATM has closed their official website's message board in response to Secret Service requests (Rage Over Rage).
UPDATE
Slate reports that despite Clear Channel's protestations to the contrary, they did indeed email the list of songs to their radio stations (Profiles in Ass Covering).

Slashdot has a sometimes humorous discussion of this list (ClearChannel Plays It Safe).
Slate's Chatterbox column takes a look at some of the songs on the list (It's the End of the World as Clear Channel Knows It ).
I can't believe I am linking to an E!Online story ("Imagine" All the Inappropriate Songs).
Snopes.com, the Urban Legend Reference Page, debunks the story, partially (Radio, Radio).
The San Francisco Chronicle reports with local radio station comments (Radio employee circulates don't-play list).
