Links: Wither Digital Media?
Posted by Ernest Miller on Friday, September 19 @ 02:12:34 EDT Copyright
Yesterday, Derek Slater attended the Berkman Center Summit Digital Media in Cyberspace: The Legislation and Business Effects and has a couple of posts up already with more to come promised. The first post is a good overview of the sort of discussions that took place (Digital Media in Cyberspace: The Conference (Part 1)). The second post concerns some of the issues I raised in (Some Questions and Concerns Regarding EFF's Filesharing Policy) and suggests that the EFF's filesharing policy is not as clear and consistent as it could be (The EFF's Principles and a Key Quote (Dig Media Conference)).

Until there is a parallel system in place and operating, everyone is sort of stuck with what is in front of them. On the other hand, suppose a parallel system was in place and operating.

Imagine it being as easy to identify independent artists and their music as it is to turn on MTV, or read the entertainment section in the newspaper, or follow the entertainment magazines. One of the advantages of independent music is that almost without exception, these artists are embracing the Internet, as they should be. Their songs are free to download, their sites are receptive to visitors seeking information, and fan clubs are encouraged.

The EFF is addressing the issue of music, downloading, copyrighted works, and the Digital Age. I'll bet you, that once there are options available, and people move to supporting and discovering independent artists, the EFF will jump for joy as they move to other issues. I can't imagine it is the least bit interesting to deal with the RIAA and our present glop of legislators or court justices. They're answering the issues in front of them, and I don't think anyone should think they are not aware of what's welling up from the underground, the grass roots of a system for music, arts, and authors in every discipline.
Just my $.02 cents worth in response to those who question the EFF's filesharing policies.
