Diminished privacy is a common 21st century theme -- and, in some cases, the cost of safety.
England already has some 1.5 million cameras installed on its streets; and now London officials plan to install video cameras on all buses, thereby exposing all commuters to police surveillance.
"Secure Beneath the Watchful Eyes" is the message printed on posters that adorn London's bus routes. The posters are supposed to deter criminal activity by reminding potential violators of the electronic eyes; but the posters have also freaked out some passengers, who worry about the implications of such tight scrutiny.
