Miami.com reports the arrest of two men who, using food, cash and hotel rooms as currency, paid "drunks" and "crackheads" to fistfight in front of a video camera. The entrepreneurs assembled the footage into a movie entitled "Bumfights, Vol 1", and sold it online. The masterpiece, described on the official web site as "the most hilariously shocking video you've ever seen", is available on DVD and VHS, and costs $19.95. Fans of the film can also buy t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts and other goodies.
The legal problem isn't the method of distribution (online sales), but the means of production: the film makers have been charged with "conspiracy, solicitation of a felony crime and illegally paying people to fight."

Re: Indie Flicks on the Web (Score: 0) by Anonymous (Name Withheld on Advice of Counsel) on Wednesday, September 25 @ 13:43:32 EDT | This doesn't seem crazy. (Arizona statute.)
Not sure what the point of the post is. Would you argue that people have a right to injure each other for money (and pay others to do the same) without state regulation? |

Making it legal (Score: 0) by Anonymous (Name Withheld on Advice of Counsel) on Thursday, September 26 @ 02:23:49 EDT | How would you make the pay legal? Do they need to professional boxers to make it legal?
Isn't it only good that the bums got something for fighting... If the producers had not paid them, they would have been fingting over nothing.
This sounds like someone doesn't like contemporary art. Sure it's nothing like Warhol, but he isn't contemporary anymore. Art often reflects the state of the society and culture from which it was spun. |
