Anti-terrorism Bill - Vote Next Week
Posted by Ernest Miller on Friday, October 05 @ 18:34:28 EDT Civil Liberties
The New York Times (reg. req.) reports that both the House and Senate are nearing passage of their respective anti-terrorism bills (Terror Laws Near Votes in House and Senate). The Senate bill gives greater power to law enforcement and it is unclear which bill will win more when they are reconciled - for example, will the compromise bill include the 2-year sunset provision? Declan McCullagh continues his excellent coverage in WIRED looking closely at the last minute changes made to the House bill (Patriot Bill Moves Along). Tech Law Journal has good resources and points out some interesting details of the bills (Tech Law Journal Daily E-Mail Alert, No. 279, October 4, 2001).

USENIX, the Advanced Computing Systems Association, has put out an alert to its members warning about the effects of the anti-terrorism bills on the computer industry (Proposed Legislation Significantly Affecting Computer Profession).
