lithorn writes "The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) filed suit against Shippensburg University in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on behalf of two anonymous students. The complaint alleges that the university's Code of Conduct violates the students' First Amendment rights by chilling free speech. The Code [PDF] purports to protect free speech but notes that the "University will strive to protect these freedoms if they are not inflammatory, demeaning, or harmful toward others." FIRE promises that this is only the first of 12 lawsuits against colleges with codes of conduct that restrict free speech -- one for each federal circuit.
