Hollywood's Short-Sighted Follies
Posted by Ernest Miller on Wednesday, August 07 @ 09:21:41 EDT Copyright
C|Net News has an interesting pair of articles today. In a special report, C|Net summarizes Hollywood's recent efforts in Washington to pass new legislation and create new regulations forcing digital rights management into every nook and cranny of our digital lives (Hollywood sets stage for piracy battle with PC industry). In a seemingly unrelated story, Microsoft is putting out its latest Media Player for public beta test starting September 9 (Microsoft's media player beat goes on). Microsoft's Media Player seems to incorporate many of the technologies that Hollywood wants mandated by law and regulation. Frankly, the best thing that could happen for Microsoft is for the government to mandate certain technology, thus stifling innovative competitors (without having to resort to monopolist practices). Hollywood is having enough trouble with Clear Channel (see LawMeme's Broadcast Radio Blues) - do they think they will have an easier time with Microsoft? Following the old saying, Hollywood should be careful what they ask Washington for; they might get it.
