Bill Gates hopes that in the course of the next five years or so, a high percentage of portables will be Tablet PCs. Not everyone is so optimistic: the folks at Gartner Inc., for instance, think in 2003 only 1.2% of notebooks will be tablets. The primary obstacles, according to Gartner's Vice President, Ken Dulaney, are poor application support, bad hardware design, and high price.
