Record Companies to Sue You!
Posted by Raul Ruiz on Wednesday, July 03 @ 11:30:46 EDT Consumers

The Wall Street Journal, by way of MSNBC, is reporting that music labels, by way of the RIAA, will soon begin to sue individuals who offer the largest collections of copyrighted music on peer-to-peer networks. Rather than taking legal action against businesses, such as Napster or Kazaa, the RIAA will instead begin to target individuals as part of its new anti-piracy campaign. Not surprisingly, the two biggest supporters of this project are Vivendi and Sony.

The RIAA has been wary of suing individuals for fear of a backlash. AOL/Time Warner has expressed their reservations about filing lawsuits against individuals because many of the P2P users have turned out to be AOL users.

This sounds like a lot more fun than legalizing attacks on P2P networks.

Raul,

Not to go all WF Buckley on you, but I assume you mean they've been "wary" of suing individuals... "weary" evokes something a bit different.

More would give up resources to share (Score: 0)

If the larger pools are taken down, I believe more users would begin to contribute their resources and allow more uploading to occur. The decentralization process will continue, while the industry must appear to be doing something.

I cant see this working because the number of nodes in some networks is many hundreds of users. This files dont go to far and can be simply shared with a few clicks if popular networks are depleted by the minority currently sharing files.
