Cryptography and Quantum Physics
Posted by Paul Szynol on Monday, November 04 @ 10:50:54 EST Cryptography
Quantum key distribution, developed by MagiQ Technologies, exploits the quirks of quantum physics to encrypt data transmitted over a dedicated, fiber optic cable.
With the system, keys to the code are transmitted as a stream of photons, sent over a fiber optic cable. Because of the properties of quantum physics, the mere act of observing the transmission would alter the photons, rendering their information useless to any eavesdroppers.

Interesting, but the requirement for a special dedicated fiber-optic line is going to make this a very small market. Not very many people can afford that, and you'd need some dedicated hardware at both ends.

As someone (I forget who) pointed out, this isn't as useful as it first sounds: the attacker can just observe all the photons, forcing you to fall back to a more insecure method.

However, It does let you know when someone's trying to listen in on your conversation. Then you can send the hounds after them.
