chrisnyls writes "If the Plaintiffs of this soon to be United States Supreme Court case have their way many Disney Copyrights will fall into the public domain in the very near future. At issue in the case is a 1998 Copyright Extension Law. The fact that the United States Supreme Court is actually hearing this case comes as quite a shock to many people. It would appear that nobody has ever before attacked the extension of a copyright under the 1998 law, which allows an additional 20 years of Copyright for "cultural works" - meaning that some Disney creations can actually be under Copyright for an astounding 95 years before falling into the Public Domain. Often royalties on Disney's copyrights are so high that even choir groups can not afford to pay them.
It may be important to note that Mickey Mouse is not likely to be one of the Copyrights that will pass into public domain of the Plaintiffs are successful on this matter.
The story may be found here.
