Canadian ISPs Not Responsible For Downloading
Posted by Rebecca Bolin on Thursday, July 01 @ 13:23:13 EDT File Sharing
The Canadian Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that ISPs are not liable for royalties for downloaded music. The Court ruled that ISPs are "intermediaries" and thus not bound by the relevant copyright laws. The Canadian music industry had argued that ISPs had a large role in file transfer and it looks they will continue to after this ruling.

Users are somewhat protected also. Canada's media levy on MP3 players and other devices has been held to extend to downloading music. This means the downloaders pay royalties via the levy, making their actions legal. A Canadian court also held that downloading or having a file available on a media sharing system did not constitute copyright infringement.
